Pan's Labyrinth: The Pale Man Scene

Guillermo Del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth" contains a scene in which Ofelia visits The Pale Man. The first shot is a tracking back extra long shot, in which the mise-en-scene is brighter and golden in colour. This shows the audience that the fantasy world is a brighter and less harsh place compared with the darker blander reality. The shot is filmed with a one point perspective which causes the effect of a long hallway which juxtaposes that of the little girl. This makes Ofelia seem smaller than she is and makes the new magical world seem large and grande. The mise-en-scene also has the effect of causing the audience to doubt the safety of the world because the pillars have connotations of overpowering strength and therefore means that we are scared for Ofelia. "Blade Runner" and "The Lady From Shanghai"

"The director is always the most important influence on a film" In both cases the directors of "Blade Runner" and "The Lady from Shanghai" were very important influences on the film, Scott and Welles had their own creative ideas behind the films that was particular to their styles. Scott brought personal influences to "Blade Runner" in the constant rain, that was reminiscent of his home area of the North of England, this is important to Scott as the main reason he chose to direct the film was because he was inspired by the story and the way he could see his deceased brother coming through. The decision to include rainy sequences adds to the picturesque dystopian imagery that whilst beautiful, is dark and dirty, this is part of Scott's auteur style and thus proves that he was a major influence on the film. When the Day Breaks (1999)

Tilby and Forbis' short film uses animalised characters making it an allegory of everyday urban life. The film starts with a rooster eating toast, after watching him butter it we see a mid-shot of the animal, who is quite clearly meant to represent a man. From the mise-en-scene of the braces, the wrinkles under his eyes and the old-fashioned glasses we can tell that he is meant to represent an old man. The fact that he's been animalised sets the film up to be a children's cartoon however, from the fact that the colour scheme is so worn out and dull, we can conclude that this will be a more serious portrayal of life that isn't as vibrant as a children's cartoon would be. As the film continues, we see a mid-shot of two rodents smoking, this feels uncomfortable to watch because as a society it is deemed wrong for animals to smoke.
