Pan's Labyrinth: The Pale Man Scene

Guillermo Del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth" contains a scene in which Ofelia visits The Pale Man. The first shot is a tracking back extra long shot, in which the mise-en-scene is brighter and golden in colour. This shows the audience that the fantasy world is a brighter and less harsh place compared with the darker blander reality. The shot is filmed with a one point perspective which causes the effect of a long hallway which juxtaposes that of the little girl. This makes Ofelia seem smaller than she is and makes the new magical world seem large and grande. The mise-en-scene also has the effect of causing the audience to doubt the safety of the world because the pillars have connotations of overpowering strength and therefore means that we are scared for Ofelia. Winter's Bone essay

How far does “Winter’s Bone” rely upon an understanding of its social context? The establishing shot is a long shot of the Ozark landscape, it is pretty desolate mise-en-scene with a scattering of cars and trailers, highlighting the extreme poverty of the area, in the foreground the bare dark brown tree, which looks quite spikey giving connotations of a harsh environment which reflects that of the characters in the film. The mise-en-scene of the forest symbolizes a distance between the Ozark community and that of the rest of the American society. This is a piece of social context that is pretty vital to understand before commencing the watching of the film, otherwise many of the elements surrounding the plot will seem weird to an active audience, for example: Ree is only allowed to talk to the women of the town who do all the work while the men laze around and do mainly nothing, with some exception to Teardrop. "Blade Runner" and "The Lady From Shanghai"

"The director is always the most important influence on a film" In both cases the directors of "Blade Runner" and "The Lady from Shanghai" were very important influences on the film, Scott and Welles had their own creative ideas behind the films that was particular to their styles. Scott brought personal influences to "Blade Runner" in the constant rain, that was reminiscent of his home area of the North of England, this is important to Scott as the main reason he chose to direct the film was because he was inspired by the story and the way he could see his deceased brother coming through. The decision to include rainy sequences adds to the picturesque dystopian imagery that whilst beautiful, is dark and dirty, this is part of Scott's auteur style and thus proves that he was a major influence on the film.
